A Little Mess - 11/13/04

Okay. Today's show title is because I got up this morning and really couldn't decide what to play. I'd thought about doing a show of only bands I've seen in concert. That show would have been very heavy on The Dead and Phish but it also would have included Green Day, The B-52's, David Gray, David Bowie, The Allmans, The Spin Doctors, The Strokes, Bob Dylan, Tori Amos, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Rusted Root, Blind Melon, Jimmy Cliff, Jimmy Buffett, AC/DC, Kiss, Black Sabbath, maybe even a little Dave Matthews Band. Actually that might have been a pretty good show. Maybe next time. I was also thinking of doing an all Old School rap show but I didn't have the time to dig through the records to find a bunch of stuff I really would have liked to play (MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Redhead Kingpin and F.B.I., Heavy D. & The Boyz, Slick Rick, Kwame - The Boy Genius, Def Jef, Digital Underground) so this fell by the wayside as well. I just wasn't into doing an all slow jams R&B and Soul show but I can definitely feel one of those coming on pretty soon but I tend to save those for rainy days.

So what I decided to do was do one of the all-from-the-new-racks-stuff shows. And I have to think that it turned out pretty good. I picked 90 percent of the stuff from the bottom shelf of the new rack - hate to see all that stuff move away before I get to listen to it - and I'm glad I did because some of it was really good.

The good:
The Dollyrots, the second Elliott Smith song, Mates of State, Gibby Haynes (actually this was really good), the Isley Brothers cover, Unbunny, Concrete Blonde (of course we've all heard of this band and while I'm not always a fan, this song was definitely good), Talib Kweli, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes (this is my absolute favorite band name) and Libbie Schrader

The in-between:
Elvis Costello, the first Elliott Smith song, The Neville Brothers, Karen Ann, Copeland, Rilo Kiley, D-Super, Roy Ashen, Rosemary Clooney, Gravenhurst, Nina Nastasia and The Safes

The bad (stuff I won't be playing again):
Virginia Coalition, The Rogers Sisters, Dollhouse, Halo Star (none of this stuff was REALLY horrible - although I really wasn't into the Halo Star thing - but it wasn't too good either)

The Isley Brothers stuff came from a compilation disc called The Isley Brothers: Taken to the Next Level (Reconstructions). This was really good. A tribute disc. The two songs I heard from it were really great. The other one was by Questlove from The Roots. If you can get your hands on this, I recommend doing just that.
