Whatever - 04/18/05

Well, well, well, this week's so was a four hour block (the Batesies are on break so there were tons of open spots and I took the one right before my regular show - I'll be doing it again this coming Monday (from noon until 4 p.m.) so feel free to tune in and if you want to make requests (although I can't garauntee I'll play them) you can call the station at 777-7915 or 777-7916 or, as long as the computer in the studio is working, I'm usually checking my work e-mail address (jrathbun@sunjournal.com) constantly or you can call my cellular phone at 577-7558 - that should be enough ways for everyone to get anything said that they want to say).

For this week's show, I went back to new racks again (I'll be doing that again this coming Monday as well), this time picking from the 5th and 6th shelves (hopefully next week I'll make it through most of 2, 3 and 4). The show went pretty well but the computer was down so I'm typing all of this in right now. I'm not sure I'll get the breaks in the CDs just right but I'll do my best.

This week, I'm only going to the good and the bad. And I'll leave out all the stuff I'd heard before. The U2 was because a friend of mine just won tickets on 97.9 to see U2 in concert in Seattle this weekend (how awesome is that?). I also played Kasey Chambers, The Donnas, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, Daniel Johnston, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, M.I.A. and Living Colour because they were in the racks. And Neutral Milk Hotel (from my iPod, thank you very much) because someone called and requested it.

The Good:
Hot Hot Heat (the label review said that they just missed being Franz Ferdinand and I think the review was right and wrong - right because they do sound somewhat like them and wrong because, in general, this is just better), 2 Hour Parking (I actually liked the second song better than the first but had I just played the first one, they'd still be on this list), Lynn Paul Jr. (straight up barroom rock 'n' roll), Todd Fraud (singer/songwriter but a bit more rock than the usual breed), Flunk (catchy girl-fronted pop), Son, Ambulance (typical sort of mellow/sort of rock-ish), Wes McDonald (the label review said it was singer/songwriter and it was - and also a little average - but it had an odd lilt that has stuck with me), Iron & Wine (last week I said I didn't get all the hype, this week I do), Brice (just nice mellow pop-y folk-y kind of stuff), Heavy Sleeper (this band rocked out in a heavy Duran Duran kind of way - at least that's what I remember), Jennifer Gentle (the cover art was pretty wild but the music was pop-y and pleasant), Jason Anderson (this song is still stuck in my head), Reckless Kelly (despite a pretty terrible name this song, like the title implies, haunts me still) and Tim Booth (sappy singer/songwriter stuff - but that's how I like it).

The Bad:
The Gripweeds, Luna, Sons & Daughters, Head Automatic, The Breeze Way, Parchman Farm, Anubian Lights, The Salem Lights, Codetta, Four Volts, The Silver State, Hank & Ruth and Pilot Scott Theory (these bands might not be all bad but they weren't that good either.
